titleOfInvention | Improvements in methods of preparing organic disulphides |
abstract | 1-Mercaptobenzthiazole, or nitro, amino or alkyl derivatives thereof are oxidized to the the corresponding dibenzthiazyldisulphides by means of hydrogen peroxide. An acid such as sulphuric, hydrochloric, formic, nitric, phosphoric, acetic or chloracetic acid is usually added to facilitate the precipitation of the product and the mercaptan is preferably oxidized in the presence of a liquid medium such as alcohol. Instead of the mercaptan its sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, strontium or barium compound may be used. In examples, 1-mercaptobenzthiazole or its sodium salt is oxidized with 30 per cent hydrogen peroxide. 1-Mercapto - 4 or 5 - methylbenzthiazole, 1 - mercapto - 4 : 6 - dimethylbenzthiazole, 1-mercapto-4- or 5-chlorbenzthiazole, 1-mercapto-4-nitrobenzthiazole, 1-mercapto-5-aminobenzthiazole and 1-mercapto-3-phenylbenzthiazole are specified as starting materials. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the oxidation of mercaptans in general with hydrogen peroxide. The following are mentioned: 1-mercaptothiazole, 1-mercaptobenzimidazole, 1-mercapto5 - nitrobenzthiazole, 1 - mercaptonaphthothiazole, 1 - mercapto - 3 - phenylthiazole, thiophenol, thiocresol, thioxylol, aminothiophenol, thionaphthol, ethylmercaptan, butylmercaptan and propylmercaptan. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
