titleOfInvention | A process for improving mineral lubricating oils |
abstract | Mineral lubricating-oils are improved as regards the temperature-viscosity curve by treatment with a selective solvent consisting of acetonitrile mixed with other solvents having greater dissolving power for naphthenic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The added solvents may be (1) a benzene derivative or heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen or oxygen such as phenol, o-, m- or p-cresol, cresylic acid, nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, aniline, chloraniline, nitroaniline, toluidine, xylidine, methylaniline, nitrophenols, benzaldehyde, benzonitrils, furfurol, furfuryl alcohol or pyridine, (2) an aliphatic compound containing nitrogen or chlorine such as ethylene diamine, ethylene or propyene dichloride, ethylene chlorhydrine, dichlorethyl ether or ethyl chloracetate, (3) an aliphatic compound containing at least two oxygen atoms such as monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol, the acetate of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, glycol diacetate, methyl formate or vinyl esters, (4) an aliphatic alcohol such as butyl or amyl alcohol or cyclohexanol, (5) an aliphatic ketone such as acetone, (6) an aliphatic aldehyde such as croton aldehyde, (7) an unsaturated aliphatic ether such as vinyl ethers of low molecular weight or (8) liquid sulphur-dioxide. The proportion of acetonitrile may vary from 5 to 95 per cent, and the treatment is carried out at temperatures from 20 DEG below zero to 100 DEG C. The treated oil may be mixed with substances to increase the viscosity such as polymerization products of isobutylene, anti-agers, agents preventing resinification, deblooming agents, dyestuffs, or agents producing fluorescence. Specification 349,071 is referred to. |
