titleOfInvention Manufacture of vinyl esters
abstract Vinyl esters are manufactured by causing acetylene to act on a carboxylic acid in the presence of a mercury compound, boron trifluoride and hydrogen fluoride. Complete exclusion of water is not necessary, so that the hydrogen fluoride may be employed in the form of its aqueous solution. The reaction may be effected under a raised pressure, and may be made continuous by introducing acetylene into a tower charged with acid and catalyst. The vinyl ester may be isolated by extraction or by distillation, if desired after addition of a small amount of the sodium salt of the acid used. In an example, acetylene is passed into acetic acid containing mercuric oxide, boron trifluoride and hydrogen fluoride (aqueous), to produce vinyl acetate. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the following vinyl esters, prepared by the action of acetylene on the corresponding acids in the presence of mercuric oxide, boron trifluoride and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride: (I) methoxyacetic acid vinyl ester; this product may be readily polymerized; (II) and (VI) vinyl acetate; (III) vinyl formate; (IV) vinyl crotonate; (V) vinyl ester of meththioglycollic acid. The preparation of sample (VI) was effected under raised pressure.
