titleOfInvention | The manufacture of alkylamines |
abstract | Individual alkyl halides (as distinct from mixtures), containing more than eight carbon atoms and only one halogen atom, the latter being attached to a terminal carbon atom, are heated with aqueous ammonia or with aqueous or alcoholic solutions of primary aliphatic amines. Secondary amines are thus obtained, with only small proportions of primary and tertiary amines; when the reaction is effected in an aqueous medium, the corresponding alcohols are the main by-products. In the examples: (1) octadecyl chloride and aqueous ammonia yield dioctadecylamine; oleyl chloride similarly yields dioleylamine; (2) tetradecyl chloride and aqueous ammonia yield ditetradecylamine; dodecyl chloride and decyl chloride similarly yield didodecylamine and didecylamine respectively; (3) tetradecyl bromide and aqueous ammonia yield ditetradecylamine; (4) octadecyl chloride and aqueous or alcoholic methylamine yield methyloctadecylamine; oleyl chloride similarly yields methyloleylamine; (5) tetradecyl chloride and alcoholic methylamine yield methyltetradecylamine; tetradecyl chloride and alcoholic n-butylamine similarly yield n-butyltetradecylamine; (6) dodecyl bromide and alcoholic methylamine yield methyldodecylamine; decyl chloride similarly yields methyldecylamine. Specifications 339,962, [Class 2 (iii)], 359,001, and 371,822 are referred to. |
