titleOfInvention The manufacture of dyestuffs of the gallocyanine series
abstract Gallocyanine dyes are prepared by condensing gallic acid or a derivative thereof such as gallamide, gallic acid arylamides, gallic acid esters or pyrogallic acid, with nitroso compounds of secondary or tertiary aromatic amines of the formula <FORM:0436096/IV/1> wherein R stands for hydrogen, alkyl or substituted alkyl and "alk" for an alkyl group of at least three carbon atoms. In examples: (1) gallic acid is condensed with nitrosobutylphenylaminopropane sulphonic acid (prepared by reacting propylene oxide with butylaniline, converting the b -oxypropylaniline to the sulphuric ester and this in turn to the sulphonic acid by means of sodium sulphite and nitrosating the product); printed as a chromium lake it yields blue shades; (2) gallamide is condensed with nitrosobutylphenylamino - b - oxypropane - g - sulphonic acid (prepared by reacting chloroxypropane sulphonic acid with butylaniline and nitrosating the product) (dyes green-blue). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 relates to the manufacture of the above gallocyanine dyes by methods known per se but this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
