titleOfInvention | Improvements in cellulose ester and ether compositions |
abstract | Compositions comprise cellulose esters or ethers which are plasticized by the addition of the hexahydrobenzoic esters of partial ethers of di- or polyhydric alcohols. Partial ethers mentioned are the monomethyl, monoethyl and monophenylethers of ethylene glycol, whilst the ester component may be hexahydrobenzoic acid itself or its alkyl or halogen derivatives, p e.g. hexahydro-p-toluic acid and commercial naphthenic acids. Cellulose nitrate, acetate, formate, propionate and butyrate are given as examples of cellulose esters, and ethyl-, methyl- and benzyl-cellulose as instances of ethers. The compositions may be worked up into sheets, rods, tubes or blocks, or moulded under heat and pressure; in the form of solutions, they may be converted by wet or dry spinning processes into filaments, or made into films, sheets or foils, or used as lacquers. Sheets of the composition may be employed as the non-shattering core of laminated glass. Filling-materials, pigments or dyes, and other plasticizers may also be present in the compositions. According to the examples, (1) a solution of cellulose acetate, the ester of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether with commercial naphthenic acid, and triacetin in acetone is spread on the gelatine-covered surface of a film-casting wheel, the acetone evaporated, and the film stripped off; (2) a coating composition comprises cellulose acetate, dimethyl phthalate, the ester of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether with commercial naphthenic acid, diphenylolpropane-formaldehyde resin, acetone, benzene, alcohol, diacetone alcohol, and a pigment.ALSO:Compositions comprise cellulose esters or ethers which are plasticized by the addition of the hexahydrobenzoic esters of partial ethers of di- or polyhydric alcohols.
