titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to the separation of meta-cresol from liquid phenolic mixtures containing it |
abstract | In the separation of meta-cresol from liquid phenolic mixtures containing it by forming a solid addition product thereof with anhydrous sodium acetate and separating, the addition product is decomposed into its constituents with the action of heat, in the absence of water and preferably in the presence of an inert non-aqueous solvent for m-cresol, which is thereafter separated by fractional distillation. The anhydrous sodium acetate recovered may be re-used in the process. According to an example, the separated solid addition product, formed in a solvent of petroleum naphtha of specified boiling range, is washed and heated to boiling with more of the solvent, filtered and the decomposition repeated with two fresh portions of solvent. m-Cresol is thereafter obtained by fractional distillation from the filtrates. Other solvents specified include petroleum naphtha of different boiling ranges, benzene and similar aromatic hydrocarbons, and carbon tetrachloride. The decomposition may also be effected at increased pressures, and without a solvent, at reduced pressures. Specification 107,961, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to. |
