titleOfInvention Improvements in laminated glass
abstract 421,541. Compound glass. ROHM & HAAS CO., 222, West Washington Square, Philadelphia, U.S.A. May 22, 1933, No. 14729. Convention date, May 25, 1932. [Class 140] Compound glass consists of two glass sheets united by several superimposed films, one of which is tough at ordinary or raised temperatures and another at low temperatures, and at least one of which is made by polymerizing together at least two acrylic and alpha-methacrylic esters. The film tough at ordinary temperatures or above may be nitrocellulose, celluloid, polymerized esters of acrylic acid, homologues, or derivatives, polymerized vinyl compounds such as vinyl acetate, itaconic esters &c., and this film as well as the film or films tough at low temperatures may be made by coating the glass sheets with a solution obtained by polymerizing together ethyl or methyl alpha-methacrylate and methyl or ethyl acrylate in a solvent such as ethylene dichloride, benzene, toluene, xylene, chlorobenzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, ethyl acetate, methyl acetate, methyl formate, acetone, or ethers. Alternatively, the films may be preformed, or unpolymerized or partly polymerized compounds applied and the polymerization completed in situ. Further films of polymers of one or more esters of acrylic acid or its homologues may be included. The films may contain, or may be sprayed before assembly with plasticizers such as dibutyl or diethyl phthalate or tartrate, the material sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Halowax," tricresyl phosphate, mono butyl ether of ethylene or di-ethylene glycol, butyl stearate, diethyl malonate or succinate, diphenyl carbonate, methyl hexyl carbinol, or benzyl benzoate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a laminated glass comprising at least one sheet of glass and a number of films, each film being selected to supply properties in which the others are deficient. Films made by polymerizing an acrylic or methacrylic ester alone or with one of vinyl acetate, itaconic esters such as diethyl itaconate, vinyl ketones such as methyl vinyl ketone, styrene, indene, and cinnamic esters such as ethyl cinnamate may be used, and also polymerized methyl vinyl ketone, indene, or styrene, or an interpolymer of cyclopentadiene and indene. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
