titleOfInvention | A process for dyeing pelts, furs or the like |
abstract | Aniline-black and like dyeing.--Hairs, pelts, furs or feathers are dyed by treatment, in a neutral acid or alkaline medium and with or without a mordant, with a diamine of the benzene series containing sulphur in the form of an alkyl mercapto group and with an oxidizing agent. Substances known to yield oxidation dyeings, such as chloro- or nitro-p-phenylenediamine, 4 - dimethylaminoaniline, 4 - amino - phenol, 2-nitro-4-aminophenol, 4-chloro-2-aminophenol, 4 : 4<1>-diaminodiphenylamine and 4-dimethylaminodiphenylamine, may also be present. The diamines containing sulphur may be further substituted, e.g. by halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxy groups. The following examples are specified. (1) White rabbit skins, mordanted with a salt of chromium, copper or iron, are dyed a bright clear greenish black by treatment for three hours with an aqueous solution containing the hydrochlorides of p-phenylenediamine and 2 : 4-diaminoethylmercaptobenzene, with an addition of ammonia to bind the hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen peroxide. (2) White rabbit skins, mordanted with a salt of chromium or copper, are dyed a clear greenish-black by treatment for three hours with an aqueous solution containing p-phenylenediamine, 2 : 4-diamino-b -hydroxyethylmercaptobenzene and hydrogen peroxide. (3) A chromium-mordanted skin is dyed a dull bluish red-brown by treatment with an aqueous solution containing 2 : 5 - diamino - 4 - ethyl - mercaptoanisol and hydrogen peroxide; a copper-mordanted skin is similarly dyed a greyish-brown and an iron-mordanted skin a dark grey; if the diamine is replaced by 2 : 5 - diamino - 4 - ethylmercapto - chlorobenzene dyeings with a yellowish tinge are obtained. (4) A white rabbit skin, mordanted with copper, is dyed a clear yellowish-brown by treatment with an aqueous solution containing 5-amino-2-b : g -dihydroxypropylamino-4-ethylmercaptochlorobenzene and hydrogen peroxide. Diamines substituted by two alkylmercapto groups, e.g. 1 : 3 - diamino - 4 : 6 - di(ethylmercapto)benzene and 1 : 3 - diamino - 4 : 6 - di(b - hydroxyethyl - mercapto)benzene, may be used. According to the Provisional Specification aromatic diamines in general substituted by alkyl-, aryl- or aralkyl-mercapto groups may be used. Diaminobenzenes substituted by alkylmercapto groups are obtained by treating the corresponding diamines containing one or more exchangeable substituents with the corresponding alkyl mercaptans or by similarly treating the corresponding substituted nitro compounds and thereafter reducing the nitro group or groups; thus 2 : 4 - diaminoethylmercaptobenzene is obtained by reducing the product of reaction of 2 : 4-dinitrochlorobenzene with ethylmercaptan and 1 : 3-diamino-4 : 6-di(ethylmercapto and b - hydroxyethylmercapto)benzenes are obtained by reducing the products of reaction of 1 : 3 - dinitro - 4 : 6 - dichlorobenzene with ethylmercaptan and b -hydroxyethylmercaptan respectively. |
