titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of cellulose ethers |
abstract | Cellulose is converted to alkali cellulose and to it there is added, without grinding, a slurry of caustic alkali in an inert liquid. The mixture is then etherified in known manner, for example, with ethyl chloride, benzyl chloride, methyl chloride, ethylene chlorhydrin, ethylene chloride, crotyl chloride, cyclohexyl chloride, amyl chloride, lauryl chloride, or propyl chloride. Preferably, the alkali cellulose to be mixed with the slurry of caustic alkali, should contain 4,5 to 36,0 molecules of water and 2,0 to 10,0 molecules of caustic alkali per molecule of cellulose. In an example, alkali cellulose prepared from cotton linters is mixed with a slurry of caustic soda in benzene, ethyl chloride, and benzene. In another example, alkali cellulose from sulphite wood pulp is kneaded with a slurry of caustic soda, and etherified with ethyl chloride and benzene. A further example is given of the preparation of benzyl cellulose from a mixture obtained by kneading alkali cellulose with a slurry of caustic soda in toluene. Other inert diluents specified are xylene, aromatic coal tar distillates, chlorobenzene, chlorotoluene, unsaturated hydrocarbons such as amylene, dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, and glycol diethyl ether. The products may be employed in the production of plastics, lacquers, artificial filaments, films, and the like. Specification 311,697, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to. |
