titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of pigments
abstract <PICT:0420308/III/1> Natural calcium fluoride is calcined at 500 DEG C., or above in the presence of a comparatively small quantity of sodium or potassium oxalate, carbonate, formate or silicate. The product may be used as a pigment, and may for this purpose be mixed with other substances for example, 5 per cent titanium oxide and 1 per cent magnesium silicate. Alternatively, the titanium oxide and magnesium silicate may be added to the mixture to be calcined. In carrying out the process, powdered fluor spar from hopper 3 is mixed in receptacle 1 with 1 per cent sodium formate from hopper 2 and the mixture conveyed to the rotary reaction tube 5. It is heated by burner 9 supplied with gas drawn from producer 6 through purifier 7. The product, which attains a temperature of 900 DEG C., is discharged into cooling chamber 10. Powder carried over by the gases collects in chamber 11. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the production of hydrofluoric acid from the calcined calcium fluoride and sulphuric acid, the treatment of this acid with alkali carbonate, and the production of lead fluoride by treatment of lead nitrate solution at 50 DEG C. with the hydrofluoric acid or alkali fluoride obtained therefrom. The lead fluoride is suitable as a pigment for undersea paints. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
