titleOfInvention | Improvements in propeller pencils |
abstract | 417,896. Pencil holders. BINA & BARREY, Ltd., BINA, F. C., and BARREY, F. F., 231, Liverpool Road, Islington, London. Oct. 18, 1933, No. 28822. [Class 146 (iii).] A propeller poncil is provided with a screw action comprising a screw-threaded tubular element and a relatively rotatable spiral spring. A tube a is provided with an embossed thread a<3> and with split portions a<1> at one end which are bent over so as to rotatably engage with an annular groove d<1> in a gland d which forms a screwed connection between the barrel band point portion p of the pencil. A sleeve s may surround the portions a<1> if they are flexible, and the upper end of the gland d may be rounded so as to permit easy engagement with the portions a'. A lead carrier e<2> is formed on the lower end of a tube e which is of non-circular cross-section so that it will slide but not rotate in the central aperture of the gland d. A spiral spring a<4> engaging with the thread a<3> is mounted on the tube e, with an inturned lower end passing through a hole in the tube and an inturned upper end passing through a longitudinal slot in the tube and then extending downwards through the tube to form a pusher-rod for the lead b. At the lower end of its travel the spring passes into an enlarged part a<3> of the tube a, when the further advance of the upper part of the spring and pusher rod expels the lead; the compression in the spring is sufficient to return it to the thread when the direction of rotation is reversed. An enlarged portion a<3> at the rear end of the tube a prevents overwinding in a similar manner at that end of the travel. The upper end of the tube a forms a lead reservoir, which is closed by a friction-tight head c which acts also as an operating knob. |
