abstract Flexible abrasive articles, e.g. sandpaper are prepared from sheets of fabric &c. which are impregnated with a composition containing a protein and a soluble silicate and/or silica gel. The silicate is conveniently sodium silicate and the silica gel is in powdered form. Materials may be added to the composition, for insolubilizing the protein such as aldehydes (hexamethylene tetramine and other aldehyde addition compounds), chrome alum, ferric chloride, tannic acid; for augmenting flexibility, e.g. hygroscopic materials such as calcium chloride and organic substances, glycerine, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol; modifying agents, e.g. rubber, pigments, oils such as castor oil, cottonseed oil, chinawood oil and sulphonated oil.
