titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to saturating or impregnating mixtures for flexible fibrous or cellulosic bases, methods of saturating or impregnating said cellulosic bases, and the products resulting therefrom
abstract A composition for coating or impregnating fibrous or cellulosic materials such as paper, cr<\>zepe paper or woven fabric, comprises a protein, for example, casein, glue and albumen, and a carrier such as silica gel or charcoal, having adsorbed thereon beforehand an insolubilizing agent for the protein. Insolubilizing agents include aldehydes such as formaldehyde and their polymers such as paraformaldehyde; addition compounds of aldehydes and ammonia such as hexamethylenetetramine, or of aldehydes and sodium bisulphite or hydrogen cyanide; compounds capable of liberating an aldehyde such as methyleneparatoluidine. Decomposition or liberation of the aldehydes may be effected by heat, either dry or in the presence of moisture, for example, steam at a pressure of 50 pounds per square inch. The composition may also contain flexibility-augmenting agents, for example, calcium chloride, glycerine, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol; oils such as castor oil, cottonseed oil, chinawood oil; sulphonated oils such as sulphonated castor oil; rubber, sodium silicate and pigments These modifying agents may also be introduced after the protein has been insolubilized.ALSO:A composition which may be used as an adhesive for securing abrasive particles to fibrous or cellulosic bases comprises a protein, for example, casein, glue and albumen, and a carrier such as silica gel or charcoal, having adsorbed thereon beforehand an insolubilizing agent for the protein.
