titleOfInvention Improved manufacture of dyestuff pastes
abstract Acetate silk dyes of the group defined below are converted into dyestuff pastes suitable for the preparation of printing colours by subjecting the dyes to prolonged trituration or grinding in a grating machine or grinding mill with a water-soluble viscous organic liquid of the group consisting of water-soluble liquid polyhydric alcohols and alkyl ethers thereof, thioalkyleneglycols and alkylol amines, in proportion insufficient to dissolve the quantity of dyestuff used, until there is produced a homogeneous paste in which the dyestuff particles are finely dispersed and do not settle during storage, the said triturating or grinding operation being carried out in the presence of water or with subsequent addition of water. The acetate silk dyes which may be so treated comprise dyes of the anthraquinone-, azo-, indophenol-or basic series containing at least one primary, secondary or tertiary amino group which are insoluble in water and have affinity for acetate silk; vat- and sulphur-dyes are not included. For the grinding or triturating operation ball mills, tube mills, colloid mills, disintegrators are mentioned, completion of the operation being determined by examining prints produced from samples of the paste until no increase in intensity is observed; generally 6--12 hours is required. Liquids specified are glycerine, polyglycerine, glycol, polyglycol, butyleneglycol, glycol monalkyl ethers, ethylenethiohydrin, diethanolamine, triethanolamine and mixtures of these. In examples: (1) diaminoanthrarufin or 1,4-dioxyethylamino-5,8-dioxyanthraquinone in the form of aqueous pastes are ground in a grinding mill with glycerine or triethanolamine for 24--48 hours; (2) the azo dye 2,4-dinitraniline --> m-aminoformanilide is ground in a grinding mill with aqueous triethanolamine; (3) the azo-dye 3-nitraniline --> N-methyl-4-oxyquinoline is ground in a grinding mill for several hours with aqueous glycerine; (4) 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone and 1,4-diamino-5-nitroanthraquinone are ground in aqueous glycerine in a grinding mill for 20--30 hours. Specifications 276,100, [Class 15 (ii)], and 400,666 are referred to.
