titleOfInvention Improvements in preparation of basic organic nitrogen compounds
abstract Amino-alcohols containing a high percentage of nitrogen, obtained by interaction of the corresponding halogenated alcohols with ammonia or amines in excess, are stated to be useful for the separation of acidic gases from mixtures containing them. Thus, 1 : 3-di-amino-2-propanol and piperidylethanol, whose preparation is described, can be used for separating carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from gaseous mixtures, the absorption product which is formed at a low temperature regenerating the amino-alcohol at a higher temperature. The amino-alcohols may be circulated continuously through the low-temperature absorption and higher-temperature regeneration stages.ALSO:Amino-alcohols containing a high percentage of nitrogen are prepared by interaction of the corresponding halogenated alcohols with ammonia or amines in considerable excess preferably in the presence of an alkali. Examples are given of the production of 1 : 3-diamino-2-propanol from glycerol dichlorhydrin and ammonia and of piperidylethanol from ethylene chlorhydrin and piperidine, both in the presence of sodium hydroxide. Reference is made to the use of glycerol monochlorhydrin and epichlorhydrin and also of alkyl- or aryl-amines. The ammonia or amines is preferably employed in an amount of five or more times that theoretically required. The products are useful for the absorption of acids, e.g., carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, from gaseous mixtures containing them, the absorption product which is formed at a low temperature regenerating the aminoalcohol at a higher temperature. The aminoalcohols may be circulated continuously through the low-temperature absorption and higher-temperature regeneration stages.
