titleOfInvention | Improvements in the manufacture and production of aliphatic amines |
abstract | Amines are obtained from alcohols containing more than four carbon atoms in the molecules by treating them with ammonia while heating, at a pressure of at least ten atmospheres, in presence of dehydrating catalysts. Temperature of 300 DEG --450 DEG C. and pressures of above 100 atmospheres, and excess of ammonia are employed. Single and mixed higher alcohols may be employed. Specification 238,319, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to. According to one example, a product containing mixed isoamyl, primary and secondary isohexyl alcohols is treated at 200 atmospheres and 380 DEG C. in presence of hydrated alumina with anhydrous ammonia. Other examples given are of the treatment of commercial amyl alcohol, to give isoamylamine and di-isoamylamine, inter alia, iso-heptyl alcohol, normal dodecyl alcohol, hydrated alumina being generally employed, and all at pressures of about 200 atmospheres. Other dehydrating catalysts specified are metal oxides including thorium oxide, tungstic oxide, silica gel, aluminium phosphate, and mixed alkalialuminium silicates, and mixtures thereof on carriers and in general base-exchange compounds. Specifications 317,079 and 334,579, [both in Class 2 (iii)], also are referred to. |
