titleOfInvention Improvements in the manufacture of fungicidal bodies
abstract Fungicidal compounds are prepared by treating an arylamide of salicylic acid and its substitution products, or an alkali metal compound thereof, with a water-soluble salt of mercury, lead, copper or zinc. Their application to seeds, tubers, corms and textiles is referred to. According to the examples, (1) mercuric chloride solution is added to an aqueous solution of sodium salicylanilide and the precipitate either dried or converted into a paste; in the dried form it is ground and then dusted as such or mixed with inert material over barley seeds or potato tubers; the paste may be made into an aqueous suspension, to which protective colloids, emulsifying and spreading agents, insecticides or other fungicides may be added, and used in the form of spray; (2) the same or similar dry or pasty products are prepared from sodium salicylanilide using mercurous nitrate, copper sulphate, lead nitrate and zinc chloride. The samples filed are prepared from (1) the sodium compound of salicyl-p-toluidide and copper sulphate, and (2) the sodium salt of 5-chlorosalicylanilide and copper sulphate. The Provisional Specification refers to compounds with heavy metals in general, i.e. metals other than alkali metals, magnesium, calcium and strontium.ALSO:Seeds, corns and tubers are protected from mildew and other fungoid growths by treatment with a mercury, lead, copper or zinc compound of an arylamide of salicylic acid or a substitution product thereof. The compound may be dusted on the seeds &c. in the form of a fine powder, to which inert diluents may be added, or it is sprayed on as an aqueous suspension which may also contain protective colloids, emulsifying or spreading agents, insecticides or other fungicides. The compounds whose preparation is described or of which samples have been furnished are the mercury, lead and zinc compounds of salicylanilide and the copper compounds of salicylanilide, salicyl-p-toluidide and 5 - chlorosalicylanilide. The Provisional Specification refers to compounds with heavy metals in general.
