titleOfInvention | A process for the production of benzoic acid and benzoates |
abstract | Bichromate used as oxidising agent in the process of the oxidation of toluene to benzoic acid is regenerated by treating the chromic oxide-containing residue with sodium chromate and caustic alkali, alkaline earth or alkali or alkaline earth carbonate or magnesia or magnesium carbonate and oxygen-containing gases under pressure. A similar regeneration may be effected when magnesium bichromate is employed in the first instance as oxidising agent.ALSO:Benzoic acid and benzoates are obtained by oxidation of toluene with bichromates or monochromates at temperatures above 100 DEG C. and under pressure employing, in addition to the material employed for oxidation, excess bichromate or a further bichromate to neutralise the alkaline substances formed in the course of the reaction. Alkali, alkaline earth and magnesium bichromates are mentioned as suitable additional bichromates. The oxidising agent may be regenerated by adding caustic alkali, alkaline earth, alkali or alkaline earth carbonate, magnesia or magnesium carbonate, and subjecting the mixture to oxidation with an oxygen-containing gas under pressure. According to an example pure toluene is treated with sodium bichromate solution at 250--300 DEG C. under pressure in sufficient quantity to neutralise the alkali formed during the reaction, and the products are worked up for benzoate and monochromate, the oxidising agent being regenerated by oxidation. |
