titleOfInvention | Manufacture of aromatic compounds |
abstract | Aryl-alkali metal compounds obtained by causing an alkali metal to react on an aromatic chloro-compound in the presence of an indifferent solvent at temperatures not exceeding 40 DEG are caused to react, without previous isolation, with substances containing reactive groups, in presence of the said reactive substance or not. The products may be subjected to further treatment such as hydrolysis. According to examples, sodium phenyl obtained by treating chlorobenzene with sodium in benzene solution is treated with (1) carbon dioxide under various conditions to give benzoic acid, (2) diethylaminoethylchloride to give diethylaminoethylbenzene, (3) benzonitrile to give benzophenone, (4) b -naphthonitrile to give b -naphthophenone imine, hence b -naphthophenone, (5) nitrobenzene to give phenol by oxidation, (6) sulphur dioxide to give benzene sulphinic acid, (7) acetic anhydride to give acetophenone, (8) phenyl isocyanate, to give benzanilide, (9) diethyl allylacetonitrile to give diethyl-allyl-acetophenoneimine; and sodium is treated with (10) p-chlortoluene followed by or with at the same time carbon dioxide to give p-toluic acid, (11) p-chloro-dimethylaniline with carbon dioxide to give p-dimethylaminobenzoic acid, and (12) m-chlorotoluene and carbon dioxide to give m-toluic acid. |
