titleOfInvention Manufacture of wool grease compositions suitable for use as driers for paints, varnishes and lacquers
abstract Complex salts of the fatty acids of wool grease and one or more of the acids commonly used in the manufacture of driers such as naphthenic, linoleic, or resin acids, or the acids obtained by oxidizing paraffin or petroleum, are used as driers for paints &c. Wool grease, or the acids obtained therefrom, may be heated together with the other acid or acids, and oxides, hydroxides, or weak acid salts such as carbonates, acetates, or borates, of one or more earth, alkaline earth, or heavy metals, for example cobalt, manganese, lead, or zinc, until fusion occurs; or the compounds may be precipitated from a solution of alkali soaps of the acids by a solution of one or more soluble salts of the metals, washed with water, and dried by heating to fusion. An addition of about 10 per cent of an amino compound such as triethanolamine, or of one or more solid monocarboxylic fatty, olefinic, or aromatic acids, or substitution products and derivatives thereof, such as palmitic, stearic, crotonic, benzoic, benzoyl-benzoic, salicylic, anthranilic, mandelic, cinnamic, or hippuric acid, may be made in the preparation of the compound. The fusion may be carried out under reduced pressure.
