abstract | Tanning-agents are prepared by condensing a non-sulphonated dioxydiphenylsulphone with an aromatic sulphonic acid and formaldehyde or sulphur chloride. Among the sulphonic acids which are particularly suitable are those of substituted phenol ethyl ethers such as are obtained by etherifying phenol with glycol chlorhydrin or ethylene dichlorides. According to the examples: (1) Naphthalene sulphonic acid is condensed with dioxydiphenylsulphone and formaldehyde; (2) tetrahydronaphthalene sulphonic acid is condensed with dioxydiphenylsulphone and formaldehyde; (3) the product obtained by sulphonating diphenylglycol ether with 93 per cent sulphuric acid is condensed with dioxydiphenylsulphone and formaldehyde; (4) the product obtained by sulphonating monophenyl glycol ether with 95 per cent sulphuric acid is condensed with dioxydiphenylsulphone and formaldehyde; (5) naphthalene sulphonic acid and dioxydiphenylsulphone are condensed with sulphur chloride. Specification 375,160 is referred to. |
