titleOfInvention | Improvements in highly emissive cathodes for electric discharge apparatus |
abstract | 395,537. Thermionic cathodes. LOEWE, S., 10, Wiesenweg, Steglitz, Berlin. Sept. 12, 1932, No. 25305. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] In a process for manufacturing highly emissive cathodes for rectifiers, amplifiers, or oscillation generators, a superficially oxidized cathode core, for example a tungsten wire, is introduced into an atmosphere of a highly emissive metal, such as barium, in a vacuum furnace'and heated to such a temperature that it reacts with the vapour to form a coating of barium oxide on the wire, after which the excess of vapour is removed, either by pumping or condensing, and a part of the wire is mounted as a cathode in a thermionic tube, heated to degasify it and convert any residual hydroxide or carbonate into the pure metal oxide, and finally provided with a coating of a highly emissive metal which is evaporated within the tube. The latter metal may be the same as that which is vaporized to form the oxide coating, but preferably consists of a light metal having a higher evaporation point. The filament material, preferably tungsten, may be coated initially with tungsten dioxide by introducing a loosely wound coil of the wire into a furnace containing hydrogen with a proportion of water. |
