titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to dyeing
abstract A sulphonic acid or an acid sulphuric ester containing an alkyl group having more than 12 carbon atoms is added as a detergent to the topping dye bath, when piece goods are dyed with indigo followed by topping with an acid or mordant dyestuff. The usual separate cleansing operation to render the dyestuffs fast to rubbing is thus avoided. In an example, a botany piece after being dyed with indigo, is rinsed and dyed in a bath containing Carmoisine WS, acetic acid, Glauber's salt and octadecylsulphuric ester. The bath is exhausted by adding lactic acid and the dyeing is chromed by means of sodium bichromate. The following detergents are also mentioned: cetylsulphuric ester, cetylsulphonicacid, octodecenylsulphuricester (obtained by treating oleyl alcohol with sodium pyrosulphate in the presence of pyridine), the oleyl ester of b -hydroxyethanesulphonic acid, cetylsulphoacetate, cetylsulphobenzylether (obtained by the action of benzylchloride on cetyl alcohol in the presence of sodamide followed by sulphonation) and octodecenyl-b -sulphoethylether (obtained by the action of sodium b -bromethanesulphonate on the sodium compound of oleyl alcohol). Specifications 307,709, 308,824, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], and 366,916 are referred to.
