titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the purification of sulphur |
abstract | <PICT:0379313/III/1> Arsenic free sulphur is obtained by digesting the crude sulphur, preferably in the liquid form, with a solution of ammonia or ammonium sulphide or carbonate. Arsenic sulphide can be recovered from the liquor by treatment with an acid and ammonia obtained by adding lime &c. and distilling. In the apparatus shown, molten sulphur at 120-130 DEG C. is forced by a pump B against a pressure of about 40 pounds to the square inch into a cylindrical washer C divided into compartments by apertured partitions K. A shaft D carries stirring blades I, one being provided in each compartment except the first and the last. A 1 per cent solution of ammonia &c. is forced in under pressure by a pump H at the other end of the washer, it being heated to 130 DEG C. by steam coils J. The purified sulphur leaves by a pipe F and the ammoniacal liquor by a pipe G, the sulphur being dried by heat which removes the last traces of ammonia &c. |
