titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to sanding sealers
abstract A coating-composition for use as a sanding sealer on rough surfaces such as wood, which may be applied as a first coat after the stain and filler, comprises a cellulose derivative, a sanding promoter, and an alkyd resin modified with rosin acid and a saturated fatty acid with more than eight carbon atoms in the molecule, with or without dyes, pigments, and flatting agents. Cellulose derivatives specified are the nitrate, and the acetate used in the presence of small quantities of nitrate. Sanding promoters specified are metal stearates (zinc, calcium, aluminium) and waxes such as carnauba wax. Resin ingredients specified are glycerol, phthalic anhydride, stearic acid, rosin acid, palmitic acid, lauric acid; proportions specified are 20-65 per cent of an ester such as glycerol phthalate, 5-40 per cent of an ester such as glycerol stearate, and 10-60 per cent of an ester such as glycerol rosinate. Flatting agents specified are aluminium stearate, hydrated alumina, silex. In an example, the composition consists of low viscosity nitrocellulose, a modified resin as set out above, zinc stearate, ethyl alcohol, butyl acetate, butyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, xylene, and toluene.ALSO:An alkyd resin for use with cellulose derivatives in coating compositions is modified by combination with rosin acid and with a saturated fatty acid having more than eight carbon atoms in the molecule. Ingredients specified in the examples are glycerol, phthalic anhydride, stearic acid, rosin acid, palmitic acid, lauric acid; proportions specified are 20-65 per cent of an ester such as glyceryl phthalate, 5-40 per cent of an ester such as glyceryl stearate, and 10-60 per cent of an ester such as glyceryl rosinate.ALSO:A composition for use as a sanding seater on rough surfaces comprises a cellulose derivative, a sanding promoter, and an alkyd resin modified with rosin acid and a saturated fatty acid having more than eight carbon atoms in the molecule, with or without dyes, pigments, and flatting agents.
