titleOfInvention | Improvements in the manufacture and production of varnishes and coatings therefrom |
abstract | The adhesive power of varnishes containing polymerized styrene is increased by the addition of natural or artificial resins such as resinic acids or their esters, for example, colophony, colophony ester resin, elemi, dammar, condensation products from phthalic acid and glycerine which may be formed in presence of monobasic acids such as fatty acids obtained from drying oils or esters of unsaturated resinic acids which have been saturated by catalytic hydrogenation. Artificial resins soluble in benzene hydrocarbon and prepared from derivatives of cyclic hydrocarbons are used. Softening agents such as alkylated or aralkylated naphthalenes, diphenyl, diphenylbenzene, tricresyl phosphate, or hydrogenated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons may be added. Pigments and dyestuffs may be added. The varnishes are preferably applied over priming coatings consisting of solutions of natural or artificial resins. Specifications 345,521 and 369,260 are referred to. |
