titleOfInvention Improvements relating to the manufacture of purified esters of phosphoric acid and thiophosphoric acid
abstract Crude alkyl, aryl, and mixed alkyl-aryl phosphoric and thiophosphoric acid esters are purified by treatment in an aqueous medium with a water-soluble permanganate such as sodium, potassium, or calcium permanganate. Excess of permanganate may be removed by the addition of a small quantity of a sulphite or an acid sulphite or by washing with water and any precipitated manganese dioxide is removed by means of solution in a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, or sulphurous acid and washing with water. The crude esters may be prepared by treating an alkali phenate with phosphorus oxychloride in an aqueous medium but the purification process is particularly effective when the esters are prepared by causing a phenol to react with phosphorus oxychloride in the presence of aluminium chloride. In this method of manufacture anhydrous phenol or cresol is mixed with aluminium chloride and phosphorus oxychloride is added. The temperature is raised to complete the reaction and the mixture is washed with a dilute base such as caustic soda to remove phenol, phosphorus oxychloride and mono- or diphenylphosphorus oxychloride and thereafter washed with water prior to treatment with the permanganate. In the example crude triphenyl phosphate is treated with an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate, additional permanganate being added if necessary and excess removed by washing with water. Precipitated manganese dioxide is dissolved by means of sulphuric acid washed free from acid and dried. Thiophosphoric acid esters may be produced and triphenyl thiophosphate purified in an analogous manner. Tricresyl phosphate and thiophosphate are also referred to.
