titleOfInvention | Improvements in the manufacture and production of styrene and its homologues |
abstract | In the process of producing styrenes and other hydrocarbons by dehydrogenating aromatic hydrocarbons having at least two carbon atoms in the aliphatic side-chain in the presence of water or other inert gases according to the parent Specification, the catalysts are replaced by dehydrogenating catalysts comprising more than 3 per cent of their weight of a metal or metals, the oxides of which are readily reducible by hydrogen, the said metal or metals being maintained in a heat-resisting chemical combination during the reaction such as in the form of salts or carbides. If water vapour or carbon dioxide are present, the said metals or their reducible compounds may be used, if desired in conjunction with the above difficultly reducible compounds. Suitable catalysts include metals of the first and eighth groups of the periodic system, such as copper, silver, gold and the metals of the iron group and their oxides or compounds, e.g. heavy metallates such as vanadates, molybdates, tungstates, chromates, borates or phosphates are suitable when working in the absence of water vapour or carbon dioxide. Nickel and its compounds may lead to a partial decomposition of the initial materials and the formation of carbon. In conjunction with the above catalysts there may be used compounds of metals of which the oxides are difficultly reducible such as compounds of tin, antimony or bismuth, and also the catalysts referred to in Specification 340,587 provided that the whole catalytic mass contains more than 3 per cent of its weight of a metal, the oxide of which is readily reducible by hydrogen, in the form of a heat-resistant compound, as defined above. The reaction may also be applied to alkylated aromatic compounds containing at least two carbon atoms in the aliphatic side-chain, such as ethyl-chlorbenzene, and is carried out at temperatures between 500 DEG and 700 DEG C. Specification 351,310 also is referred to. |
