titleOfInvention | A process of incorporating rubber with cellulose derivatives |
abstract | In the manufacture of a leather or rubber substitute, a rubber p solution is mixed with a plastic mass prepared by precipitating a cellulose derivative from a solution of it containing at least one plasticizer capable of co-precipitation by adding a precipitating liquid miscible with the solvent (or if a solvent mixture, with one of the constituents or, in addition, also non-miscible with one of the constituents). The rubber may be dissolved in a solvent miscible either with the precipitating agent or the mixture of precipitating agent and cellulose derivative solvent. In addition the mixture may also contain natural or artificial resins, dextrin, glucose, grape sugar, cellulose ethers, glue, gelatin, agar-agar, alkali silicate, oils, glycerine, sulphonated oils or fatty acids. As plasticizer tricresyl phosphate, triacetin, or esters of phenols or polyphenols may be used. In examples the nitrocellulose solvent is (1) a mixture of acetone, methylated spirit and ether and (2) acetone; the precipitant in both cases is water, and the rubber is in solution in benzene. The material is then made into a rubber or leather substitute by any known process, e.g. spreading, calendering or moulding either on a suitable backing or by including fibrous material in the mixture. |
