titleOfInvention | Improvements in the manufacture and production of polymerisation products |
abstract | In the polymerization of diolefines in emulsion, the process is arrested when the amount of polymerizate soluble in benzene attains a maximum; this usually occurs when from 20 to 30 per cent of the diolefine remains unpolymerized. Other polymerizable compounds may be present, such as styrene, vinyl compounds, esters of acrylic acid, methylene methyl ethyl ketone (C2H<5>,CO,CH : CH2) or polymerizable fats or oils or their derivatives such as linseed or China wood oils; also hydrocarbons other than diolefines, alcohols, ethers, esters, and acids, particularly higher fatty acids. Catalysts such as oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, ozonides and the like and also colloidal substances such as albumenous substances, natural or synthetic resins, and rubber may be employed and the process may be terminated by coagulation by means of acids, or, if it is desired to obtain the product in the form of a latex, a substance may be added which has a decomposing or reducing action on the catalyst. The temperature may be 10-20 DEG C. In Examples (1) butadiene is emulsified in a closed vessel with ammonia, water, olein, and hydrogen peroxide, the temperature being 20-25 DEG C. for the first 2 days, and then 20 DEG C.; after 4 days the pressure is released and the mixture coagulated by an acid, 30 per cent of the butadiene being recovered; (2) in a similar process the product is stabilized as a latex by adding aldol naphthylamine and then coagulated with acids; (4) a mixture of butadiene and styrene is emulsified with oleic acid, ammonia solution, and hydrogen peroxide at 50 DEG C. for 92 hours, the excess of butadiene being removed by releasing the pressure; (6) butadiene and isoprene are emulsified with oleic acid and ammonia solution and polymerized at 60 DEG C. for 5 days; half the emulsion is coagulated with acetic acid, the product being soluble in benzene; if the rest of the emulsion is further polymerized for another 5 days at 60 DEG C. the product only swells in benzene. Specifications 323,721 and 333,894, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to. |
