titleOfInvention Process for inhibiting the development of micro organisms
abstract p-Cyansalicylic acid which has disinfectant and fungicidal properties is prepared by diazotizing p-aminosalicylic acid and treating the diazonium solution with potassium copper cyanide.ALSO:The growth of micro-organisms in liquid or solid materials such as glue, starch, gum, fabrics, vegetable tanning extracts, cork or other animal or vegetable substances is prevented by treatment of the materials with a compound containing a benzene nucleus substituted by at least one phenolic hydroxyl group and at least one cyanogen radicle. Suitable compounds are cyanphenols, alkylated cyanphenols such as cyancresols, cyanphenol carboxylic acids and their esters and amides, and halogenated cyanphenols and cyanpolyphenols. Particular compounds specified are p-cyansalicylic acid (obtained by diazotizing p-aminosalicylic acid and treatment of the diazonium solution with potassium copper cyanide), p-cyanphenol, o-cyanphenol, and 4-cyan-2-chlorophenol. Alkali compounds, ethers, or acid esters of the cyanphenols and their derivatives may be employed and other disinfecting agents such as halogenated phenols, hydroxybenzoic esters, formaldehyde, or boric acid may be added. The use of bis-(cyanphenol) sulphides which is described in Specification 349,004 is excluded.
