titleOfInvention Improvements in the manufacture and production of aldehydes and ketones
abstract Aldehydes and ketones, together with bye-products which include ethers, and unsaturated alcohols, are obtained by passing 1.2-alkylene oxides or mixtures thereof with 2.3-oxides over catalysts comprising halides or oxyhalides of the alkaline-earth metals, including magnesium and beryllium, or mixtures thereof with each other or with any of the catalysts or activating or stabilizing agents described in the parent Specification. The catalysts may be employed untreated, deposited on granular carriers, or mixed with metallic, mineral, or ceramic materials such as pumice meal, clay, kieselguhr, glass powder, or graphite meal. The reaction is usually carried out in the gaseous phase at atmospheric or reduced pressure, but pressures up to 50 atmospheres may also be employed. The reaction temperatures are preferably between 200 DEG and 450 DEG C. Inert gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or steam may be mixed into the oxide vapours. According to examples: (1) propionaldehyde and acetone are obtained by passing propylene oxide at 330-350 DEG C. over granules of barium bromide previously heated to 350 DEG C. in a current of air ground in a ball mill, and intimately mixed with kieselguhr; (2) propionaldehyde and acetone are obtained by passing propylene oxide vapour and nitrogen at 300 DEG C. over granules formed from a mixture of magnesium oxychloride, magnesium ammonium phosphate, and bleaching earth previously heated in a current of air at 350 DEG C., and (3) commercial butylene oxide, consisting of isobutylene oxide, 1.2-butylene oxide, and 2.3-butylene oxide is passed at 300 DEG C. over a granulated mass consisting of calcium fluoride, barium fluoride, and kieselguhr. The product contains iso-butyraldehyde and n-butyraldehyde together with some methylethyl ketone and unsaturated aldehydes and alcohols.
