titleOfInvention The manufacture of arylsulphonic-esters of 2.8-dihydroxynaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid
abstract Arylsulphonic esters of 2 : 8-dihydroxy naphthalene-6-sulphonic acid are obtained by treating 2 : 8 dihydroxynaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid with one molecule of an arylsulphochloride in presence of alkali, to give the 8-ester, further treating with arylsulphochloride to give the di-ester, and partially saponifying to the 2-ester, or by treating 2-amino-8-hydroxynaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid with an arylsulphochloride in presence of alkali, and converting the amino-group into the hydroxy group by customary methods. The 2-acylamino compound may be employed with subsequent saponification of the acylamino group. According to examples:-2 : 8-dihydroxynaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid is treated with benzenesulphochloride to give the 8-ester and the di-ester, the former of which is isolated by fractional crystallization; with p-toluene sulphochloride, to give the di-ester, which is saponified to the 2-ester; the benzenesulphonic-2-ester is obtained in a similar-manner; and 2-acetylamino - 8 - hydroxynaphthalene - 6 - sulphonic acid is treated with benzenesulphochloride to give the 8-ester which is saponified to the 2-amino-8-ester, followed by diazotization and conversion to the 2 - hydroxy - 8 - ester. Specification 335,893, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
