titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of the hormone of the anterior lobe of the hypophysis
abstract The hormone of the anterior lobe of the hypophysis is salted out from the urine of pregnant women, or from an aqueous solution of a preparation of the hormone obtained from said urine, by the addition of certain water-soluble salts in quantity such that the concentration of the anhydrous salt in the liquid is 20 per cent or above. The salts specified are sulphates of ammonium, zinc and aluminium, chlorides of zinc, barium and calcium, carbonate of potassium, acetates of sodium and potassium, nitrate of calcium, and mixtures of such salts or of sodium sulphate and magnesium sulphate. The salting-out agent may be fractionally added so that fractional precipitates of high activity may be obtained. According to various examples the initial substances treated are urine of pregnant women, an aqueous solution of a crude product obtained from urine produced in accordance with Biedl. Endokrinology, Vol. II, 1928, p. 244, and an aqueous solution of a product obtained from urine by the process described in Specification 323,474, [Class 81 (i), Disinfecting &c.]. Precipitation may be facilitated by ice cooling, and the precipitate may be separated by centrifuging and dried by grinding with alcohol.
