abstract Reaction between gases and pulverulent or granular solids are effected by distributing the solid within a loosely packed mass of relatively large, inert bodies such as iron balls, pebbles, brickbats &c. which are maintained in a state of limited relative movement, and passing the reacting gas through the mass, preferably in countercurrent to the solid. The illustrated apparatus comprises a rotating cylinder 12 almost filled with pebbles &c. 22 as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with annular baffles 14 of sufficient depth to prevent unrestricted flow of gas above the pebbles. The pulverulent solid is fed in by a conveyer 36 and enters the cylinder between annuli 26 which are sufficiently close together to prevent escape of the pebbles. At the other end of the cylinder it escapes through a similar device and is lifted by a scoop 56 to the conveyer 60. The reacting gas is admitted by a pipe 62 and escapes through the tube 34. The cylinder is partly supported by a bath of molten lead 84 which may serve to heat or cool it or to <PICT:0348651/III/1> <PICT:0348651/III/2> equalize its temperature. The apparatus may be used for the treatment of an iron sulphide ore with sulphur chloride to form ferrous chloride and free sulphur.
