343,441. Catalyst carriers ; sulphur trioxide. NICKELL, L. F., 3016, Linden Place, East St. Louis, Illinois, U.S.A. Nov. 14, 1929, No. 34771. Convention date, Aug. 8. [Class 1 (i).] A catalyst carrier is obtained by mixing a porous mineral matter, such as kieselguhr, with sufficient waterglass, preferably potassium waterglass, to form a workable mass, which is then moulded into pellets, e.g. of 7/32 inch diameter. The pellets are then dried, and the waterglass decomposed, leaving a product consisting of the mineral in a matrix of silica. The decomposition is preferably carried out with an acid gas, e.g. sulphur burner gas at approximately 400‹ C. After cooling, the carrier may be sprayed &c. with a catalytic material. For sulphur trioxide catalysis, the carrier may be sprayed with potassium vanadate. The material may also be platinized, or treated with a nickel compound, and then subjected to a reducing atmosphere. Specifi. cation 23541/13, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], and U.S.A. Specifications 687,834 and 1,371,004 are referred to. |
