titleOfInvention The decolourisation of synthetic resins
abstract Aromatic sulphonamide-aldehyde resins are decolourized by treatment with absorbent decolourizing agents, preferably while in solution. The decolourizing agents are removed by filtration and the solution may be employed as such or evaporated to separate the resin. Solutions containing the resins and a derivative of cellulose may be employed as lacquers or coating compositions for metal, glass &c. or as finger-nail polishes. Specifications 315,807, 315,808 and 317,456 [all in Class 95, Paints &c.], are referred to.ALSO:Aromatic sulphonamide-aldehyde resins are decolourized by treatment with an absorbent decolourizing agent, preferably while in liquid form or in solution. The resins may be prepared by condensing with formaldehyde or other aldehyde or reactive methylene compound a benzene sulphonamide, a xylene sulphonamide, a toluene sulphonamide or a toluene ethyl sulphonamide, according to the processes of Specifications 315,807, 315,808 and 317,456, [all in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. As decolourizing agents are specified bone black, carbon black, activated charcoal, Fuller's earth and silica gel, and as solvents for the resins acetone, alcohol and benzene. In an example the resin produced by condensing equimolecular proportions of p-toluenesulphonamide and formaldehyde at elevated temperatures under a reflux, removing the water formed and heating the product to 245-250 DEG C. until a hard resin is obtained, is dissolved in acetone and treated with carbon black or Fuller's earth at 45-50 DEG C., the decolourizing agent then being removed by filtration and the acetone distilled off. Plastic compositions; lacquers; cellulose esters and ethers, processes for making filaments and films from; adhesives.-Resins which have been decolourized by the above process may be incorporated in coating or plastic compositions containing derivatives of cellulose, with, if desired, solvents, plasticizers, softeners, other resins, pigments and dyes. Solutions containing the resins and cellulose derivatives may be employed as lacquers, coating compositions or adhesives, or may be employed for the manufacture of photographic or other films, or spun into threads by the wet or dry method. Reinforced glass may be prepared by employing a solution of the resins and cellulose derivatives for causing cellulose derivative sheets to adhere to sheets of glass, or by employing a plastic composition of the resin with a cellulose derivative as the reinforcing layer.ALSO:Aromatic sulphonamide-aldehyde resins, which have been decolourized by treatment with absorbent decolourizing agents, may be incorporated in plastic compositions containing derivatives of cellulose, with, if desired, solvents, plasticizers, softeners, other resins, pigments and dyes. Solutions containing the resins and cellulose derivatives may be employed as adhesives. Specifications 315,807, 315,808 and 317,456, [all in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], are referred to.
