titleOfInvention Manufacture of cellulose esters containing radicals of different organic acids
abstract 338,798. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Feb. 25, 1929, [Convention date]. Cellulose carboxylates.-Mixed organic esters of cellulose are prepared by treating cellulose with an organic acid or its anhydride, and the halide of another organic acid, in the presence of a tertiary base, the quantity of which is smaller than that which is equivalent to the acid and acid derivatives present. The acid radicals thus introduced into the cellulose molecule may be derived from lower and higher saturated and unsatured fatty acids and cyclic carboxylic acids. The products are readily soluble, and when mixed esters containing the acetyl group are prepared as described above, an after-treatment for attaining acetonesolubility is unnecessary. The products may be used for making artificial filaments, films, lacquers, &c. Examples are given describing the preparation ot (1) a cellulose acetate-naphthenate by treating cellulose with glacial acetic acid and naphthenic acid chloride in the presence of pyridine; (2) a like product obtained with the use of acetic anhydride instead of acetic acid; (3) a cellulose acetate-butyrate by treating cellulose with acetyl chloride and butyric acid in the presence of pyridine bases; (4) a butyric-cocoa-fattyacid ester by treating cellulose with butyryl chloride and cocoa fatty acid in the presence of pyridine bases.
