titleOfInvention Method of purification of synthetic ªÃ-butyl alcohol
abstract 335,683. Riley, R., Rowell, S. W., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. Aug. 13, 1929. Carbon compounds, obtaining. - n-Butyl alcohol obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of aldol, crotonaldehyde, or butyraldehyde is purified by electrolytic reduction in aqueous electrolyte solution, preferably either acid or alkaline. Sulphuric acid and sodium bisulphite are suitable electrolytes. In an example, a mixture of synthetic n-butyl alcohol obtained from crotonaldehyde and an equal volume of 20 per cent sulphuric acid is subjected to electrolytic reduction employing a mercury cathode and a current density of 0.05 amps. per sq. cm. The mixture, which is vigorously stirred, is separated by a porous partition from the anode compartment which contains dilute sulphuric acid and a lead anode. The product separates into two layers, the lower aqueous layer being used for treating a fresh quantity of butyl alcohol. The upper layer is neutralized and distilled, the distillate separating into two layers of which the upper contains the purified butyl alcohol, substantially free from aldehyde.
