titleOfInvention Improvements in the manufacture and production of artificial masses
abstract 333,166. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). April 25, 1929. Synthetic resins.-Artificial resins are obtained by condensing one or more vinyl esters, for example, vinyl acetate, in the presence of at least 5 per cent by weight thereof of acid condensing agents, with mono- or polyhydric phenols or mixtures thereof. Inert solvents or diluents, for example, softening agents such as mineral, animal, or vegetable oils, long chain fatty acids or their esters, also factis, cellulose esters, and usual fillers and colouring matters may be added before or during the condensation. Phenols specified are phenol, cresol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, and pyrogallol. Acid condensing agents specified are hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, ferric chloride, aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, aniline hydrochloride, and sulphur chloride. The starting materials may include polymerized vinyl esters which may, for example, be dissolved in the simple ester, or the later may be partially polymerized by known methods before the reaction; in these cases the products may be improved by treatment with sulphur or sulphurizing agents such as mono- or polysulphides, sulphur halides, or selenium sulphides, and, if desired, vulcanization accelerators, for example, zinc oxide, lead oxides, hexamethylenetatramine, diphenylguanidine, furfuramide, aldehyde-ammonia compounds, and piperidine pentamathylenedithiocarbamate. Polymerized vinyl acetate or chloracetate or mixtures thereof are mentioned as suitable polymerized vinyl esters. The condensation reaction may be carried out at temperatures between 40‹ and 100‹ C. The primary condensation products may be distilled in vacuo and subsequently hardened by heating, with or without the employment of pressure. Examples are given. Specifications 15271/14 and 314,646 are referred to.
