titleOfInvention Improvements in the condensation of aromatic compounds with olefinic compounds
abstract 327,382. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 28, 1928. Hydrocarbons and heterocyclic compounds, and derivatives thereof.-Olefinic compounds are condensed with aromatic, or partly, or completely hydrogenated aromatic hydrocarbons or derivatives thereof, or aliphatic saturated compounds, in the presence of a catalyst containing a metal meta- or pyro-phosphate, -borate, or - arsenate which is difficultly reduced by hydrogen at the temperatures employed. Particularly suitable catalysts are salts, according to the above definition, of di- or tri-valent metals such as zinc, chromium, manganese, or earth metals such as cerium and aluminium, and these may contain a small amount of the free acid. The condensations are preferably carried out at superatmospheric pressure and at temperatures from about 200‹ to 500‹ C. In the examples in which cerium metaphosphate is used as catalyst, condensation is effected between (1) naphthalene and ethylene, (2) toluene and butylene, (3) dekahydronaphthalene and ethylene, (4) styrene and naphthalene, the pressure being maintained in this latter case by supplying nitrogen to the autoclave until a pressure of 30 atmospheres is obtained. In each of the above examples, the product is of an oily nature and may constitute a very viscous lubricating oil. Further examples are given in which the catalysts used are cerium aluminium metaphosphate, chromium metaphosphate, cerium metaborate, and aluminium meta- or pyroarsenate. Other examples are given in which (1) aniline is condensed with ethylene to give substituted anilines together with tertiary bases containing heterocyclically combined nitrogen, (2) p-chlorethylbenzene is obtained from monochlorbenzene and ethylene, (3) substituted phenols are obtained by condensing phenols with ethylene. In an example in which ethylene is condensed with stearic glyceride, the product contains low fatty acids due to the breaking down of the complex molecules produced by condensation. Specification 311,899 is referred to.
