titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of butyl alcohol
abstract 326,812. Neumann, E. Sept. 18, 1928. Alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones. - Higher alcohols, accompanied by the corresponding aldehydes and ketones, are obtained by passing the vapours of lower alcohols, alone or in admixture, at atmospheric pressure and a temperature not exceeding 350‹ C. over catalysts comprising a mixture of a hydrogenating or dehydrogenating component with a dehydrating component. Starting from single alcohols it is possible to obtain alcohols having twice the number of carbon atoms, whilst a mixture of different alcohols gives rise to products whose number of carbon atoms equals that of the starting materials. Hydrogenating or dehydrogenating catalysts mentioned are silver, copper, cobalt, iron and nickel; as dehydrating catalysts the oxides of aluminium, thorium, iron, chromium, tungsten, titanium and beryllium are specified, and dehydrating salts are referred to. The aldehydes and ketones arising from the debydrogenation of the original alcohols, together with the unaltered portion of the original alcohols, may be reintroduced into the process, or circulated through a second system containing the same catalyst. Examples are given of the preparation of (1) butyl alcohol from ethyl alcohol using a mixture of copper and alumina or thoria; acetaldehyde and butyl aldehyde are also obtained; (2) 2-methylpentanol-1 and the corresponding aldehyde from propyl alcohol over a mixture of silver and alumina; (3) methylisobutylcarbinol and the corresponding ketone from isopropyl alcohol over a mixture of copper, nickel and thoria; (4) methylpropylcarbinol and methylisobutylcarbinol, together with the corresponding ketones and some butyl aldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone, from a mixture of ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol over copper and kaolin. Specification 302,759 is referred to.
