Medicinal preparations; disinfectants. - An antiseptic and cicatrizing solution for the treatment of wounds is obtained by electrolysis of a solution of alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal chlorides, e.g. a dilution of seawater or an isotonic solution of blood serum or the physiological solutions of Ringer and Locke at a current density high enough to produce ozone. A minimum density of <3>/10 amp. per <1>/100 sq. in, is necessary. The electrolyzing apparatus comprises a parallel pair of bare wire electrodes 4 extending horizontally from a plug 2 of glass, rubber, ebonite, or other insulating material, provided at the opposite end with contacts 7. The plug may be bent at the bottom, as shown, and also at the top so as to allow suspension on the upper edge of the container. The electrodes are covered by a perforated cap 3. In a modification the plugs are inserted horizontally at the bottom of the vessel and are surmounted by a horizontal grating. The vessels may be of glass, porcelain, earthenware or other insulating material, and may be sufficiently large to receive a limb or the body of the patient. The electrodes may be of graphite, compressed carbon (optionally platinized) or platinum. The current may be supplied from the mains and may be direct or alternating; in the latter case one of the electrodes may be of a metal such as tantalum having unilateral conductivity, or other rectifying means may be employed. |
