titleOfInvention Improved manufacture of abrasive wheels
abstract 319,200. Carborundum Co., Ltd., (Carborundum Co.). May 15, 1928. Divided on 319,221. Rasping-apparatus.-An abrasive wheel, reinforced by metal rings or plates, has expansion joints between the metal and the abrasive in order to compensate for the different thermal expansions of the metal and the abrasive material respectively, the joints comprising an elastic cement having a tensile strength at least equal to that of the abrasive material. In Fig. 2 is shown an abrasive wheel built up of segments 21 cemented together, and having embedded therein metal rings 25 - - 28 with expansion joints 29, which may comprise a synthetic resin to which a solvent and a filler, for example, plaster of paris are added, and which is set by heating the wheel to about 165‹ C. The construction described may be applied to non-segmental wheels, and in a modification, Fig. 6, perforated plates 45 - - 49 are employed instead of rings and are secured to the abrasive by a cement as described above. The expansion joints may consist of the elastic cement coated onto the metal, this being cemented in place by Portland or oxychloride cement. The wheel is mounted on a shaft 32 by end clamps 31; the cement may comprise polymerised styrol or cellulose acetate in place of the synthetic resin.
