abstract 317,713. Marks, E. C. R., (Kelp-Ol Laborabories, Inc.). Feb. 20, 1928. Medicines for internal use.-A medicine adapted to carry lactic acid, or other organic acid such as malic or citric, into the intestines or colon so as to produce an acid condition therein favourable to the development of any bacillus acidophilus which may be present, consists of an emulsion of an aqueous solution of the acid, agar agar and mineral oil; the emulsion being prepared by heating the agar with the acid solution, mixing the solution obtained with the mineral oil, and agitating the mixture during cooling. Flavouring and preservative substances and glycerine mav also be added. According to an example agar is boiled in very dilute aqueous solution of lactic acid; sodium chlorate, sodium benzoate, vanillin and sugar are added to the solution and heating is continued until these have dissolved; mineral oil is heated and added to the solution during stirring; after agitation for five minutes glycerine is added; finally the whole mixture is agitated until cool. In a modified process, wherein the same ingredients are employed, the agar solution, containing the acid, flavourings and preservatives, is heated to boiling and added to the mineral oil in a mixing machine, glycerine being added after five minutes, and agitation continued until the mass has cooled.
