titleOfInvention Process for manufacturing high emission cathodes for thermionic valves
abstract 314,551. Loewe, B. June 30, 1928, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.-In the formation of thermionic cathodes, metals of a specific gravity of 3.8 and less, preferably alkaline earth metals, or compounds of such metals, are precipitated on the cathode by decomposition of gaseous organic compounds of the metals. A carbonaceous deposit, mainly carbide, may be formed and may be converted to oxide by reaction with an oxide previously, simultaneously or subsequently deposited on the cathode or with water vapour, the gases formed being pumped off. Barium alkyl, Ba(CnH2n+1)2, preferably the methyl compound with n=1 or the ethyl compound with n=2, may be vaporized in the valve after evacuation and freeing the parts from gas, the cathode being brought to red heat. Barium carbide is formed and is converted to barium oxide by aqueous vapour, or by nickel oxide on the tungsten cathode. Hydrocarbons formed and any excess of barium alkyl are removed by evacuation. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprise also the conversion of deposited pure metal into compounds such as the hydroxide and the conversion of deposited hydroxides into oxides and refers to Specification 306,960. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
