titleOfInvention | Improvements in the manufacture and production of synthetic tanning agents |
abstract | 304,454. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Ake.-Ges.). Jan. 9, 1928. Phenol-formaldehyde-resorcinol condensation products. - Water-soluble synthetic tanning agents are obtained by condensing phenol alcohols, which may also contain alkylated hydroxyl or carboxylic groups, with resorcinol at a temperature below 50‹ C., preferably in the presence of an acid or alkaline condensing agent. The phenol alcohols may be obtained in any convenient manner, e.g. by condensing a monohydric phenol of the benzene series or a derivative thereof, such as phenol, cresols, guaiacol, thymol, salicylic or cresotinic acids, &c., with formaldehyde or substances which furnish formaldehyde: for instance an aqueous solution containing 5 or 6 molecular proportions of formaldehyde may act on 1 molecular proportion of phenol. The products obtained need not be isolated from aqueous solution, but may be treated direct, with resorcinol preferably in the proportion of 1 molecule of resorcinol for each methylol group in the phenol alcohol. Examples :-(1) A soda solution of phenol is treated with aqueous formaldehyde and after standing some days is neutralized, and a solution of resorcinol and a small quantity of hydrochloric acid is added; the product obtained after standing may be separated by concentrating in vacuo. (2) A product obtained from phenol formaldehyde and resorcinol in different proportions from those of (1). (3) Phenol and formaldehyde are condensed with the aid of barium hydroxide, and after precipitation of the baryta by carbon dioxide the filtrate is treated with resorcinol. (4) A solution of salicylic acid in caustic soda is treated with formaldehyde and resorcinal as in (1). (5) p-Cresotinic acid in caustic soda is treated with formaldehyde and resorcinol as in (1). |
