titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to hard metal compositions |
abstract | 303,751. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd.., (Assignees of Kelley, F. C.). Jan. 7, 1928, [Convention date]. Metals, powdered, obtaining coherent masses from; alloys.-A method of forming a hard composition suitable for metal cutting tools and dies comprises heating to sintering temperature a temporarily bound mixture of powdered materials, particularly a mixture of a refractory metal, a metal of the iron group, and carbon, for example tungsten, cobalt, and carbon. Magnet or tool steels containing for example cobalt and chromium, or cobalt and molybdenum, or cobalt, tungsten and chromium may be similarly made. A mixture consisting of tungsten, 5-25 per cent of cobalt, and 3-10 per cent of carbon may be mixed with about 2 per cent of a binder which may be gum tragacanth or an alkyl resin such as that described in Specification 3271/13, [Class 95, Paints &c.], moistened with acetone, pressed, heated in hydrogen in graphite tubes slowly to 100-150‹ C. to harden the resin, then slowly to 350‹ C. for about 1 ¢ hours. Specifications 288,521 and 289,477 also are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that a temporary binder may be dispensed with and a mixture of tungsten, cobalt, and carbon fritted under pressure in a carbon mould at about 850‹ C., the material being afterwards heated to 1,375‹ C. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
