titleOfInvention A process for splitting hydrocarbons
abstract 302,349. Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij. Dec. 16, 1927, [Convention date]. Acyclic hydrocarbons.-Hydrocarbons normally in the gaseous state are cracked in the presence of halogens or halogen compounds. Compounds of halogens containing hydrogen, sulphur, phosphorus and oxygen may be used as well as the elementary halogens. Activators such as copper, iron, or their salts, oxygen, sulphur, &c., may also be added. Propane containing a small proportion of iodine is heated to 575‹ C. and products containing 15 per cent of unsaturated compounds are obtained. Butane is passed through carbon tetrachloride and then through a tube heated to 600‹ C. The outflowing gases contain 42.2 per cent olefines. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the destructive hydrogenation and cracking of liquid hydrocarbons in the presence of halogens or their compounds. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
